چکیده

1 Introduction The familiar paradigm of Latin first declension nouns in (1) illustrates case syncretism: although at least five cases are recognised, neither the singular nor the plural has five distinct forms: in the singular the genitive and dative are identical, and in the plural the dative and ablative are identical.

Why the Ablative, Locative, and Instrumental Cases Fell Together in Latin

Sihler (1995:253, 285) finds it odd that the ablative and locative cases fell together in Latin, since their meanings are nearly opposite, place-fromwhich and place-in-which. But they did fall together, and the instrumental case joined them, as the Sanskrit-like eight-case system of late Indo-European developed into the six-case system of Latin. The syncretism was not phonologically or morpholo...

Distributed Morphology and the Evolution of the Indo-European Case System

In this thesis, I examine the nominal morphology of Proto-Indo-European, Attic Greek, and Hittite in the theoretical framework of Distributed Morphology (DM), a recent theory which departs from traditional conceptions of morphology in a number of ways. In the first three chapters, we will address these three languages one at a time, showing that DM gives us new insight into the synchronic syste...

Underspecification and Neutrality: a unified approach to syncretism

In this paper I discuss the phenomenon of syncretism in German and show that current type-based approaches are unable to combine the treatment of feature indeterminacy with the virtues of underspecification. I will then propose a revised organisation of the inflectional type hierarchies suggested by Daniels (2001), drawing on a systematic distinction between inherent and external (case) require...

Having Need and Needing Have in Contemporary Indo-European

This paper begins by pointing out a new generalization regarding the distribution of transitive need throughout Indo-European. It is shown that only those Indo-European languages that have a transitive verb have used to express possession (i.e., HAVElanguages) may also have a transitive verb need. No Indo-European BE-language has a transitive verb need. In light of this generalization, we argue...
